About Punjabi University
Punjabi University is one of the best Universities in the country today and it is located in Patiala. The University was set up in April, 1962 and after the Hebrew University of Israel, it is the second University in the world which is named after a language. The University was set up with the aim of promoting education and research in various fields especially for the enrichment and development of the Punjabi culture and language while keeping the educational and social requirements of the state.
The University was set up as a teaching and residential University in 1962 and at that point of time was not an affiliating University. The University did not have a separate building at that time and it started working from the building of the Barandari Palace. With the 16km radius, nine colleges in Patiala came under the jurisdiction of the University. In the year 1965, the University moved to its present campus. The campus is spread in an area of 316 acres and is beautiful, pollution free and lush green. There are international facilities available in the University for all the researchers and the students, enrolled in the city.
The University was setup to promote Punjabi bit, since its inception, the University has grown tremendously ensuring that the University today is a multi faculty and multi faceted one. Since 1969, the University turned into an affiliating one, when 43 colleges of the State from different districts were affiliated to it. There are many facilities available for the students on campus. The Guru Gobind Singh Bhawan and the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hall are the landmark buildings in the University campus. Apart from these there is media centre, a library known as the Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha Central Library, Bhagwan Dass Canteen, Science Auditorium, Velodrome and the University College of Engineering are the prominent parts of this beautiful and lush green campus.
The Punjabi University offers a wide range of courses to the students at the undergraduate, post graduate and at the doctoral levels. There are various disciplines that are offered by the University like Biology, Economics, Chemistry, Commerce, Foreign languages, Fine Arts, Geography, History, Hindi, Law, Journalism and Mass media, Music and Dance, Microbial technology, Library and Information Science, Pharmacy, Persian, Punjabi, Psychology, Sociology, Sports, Zoology besides the others. Besides these the University also offers some diploma courses for the students.
The Library of the University is extremely well stocked with a wide range of books and journals available here for the help of the students. The capacity of the reading hall is more than 400 students and there are many facilities available here for the convenience and the comfort of the students. all the departments of the University work with an aim to promote the culture of quality research. Many national and international agencies fund the departments of the University. All the departments of the University are connected through the Local Area Network which helps students and faculty members to share information and be connected to the Internet.
